Mike Leigh heads to Warsaw for an extensive retrospective to celebrate British Council's 75th anniversary of working in Poland.

In partnership with the Polish National Film Archive, British Council Poland is delighted to launch 'Secrets and Lies of Mike Leigh' - a major retrospective of one of Britain's most celebrated film and theatre directors which begins this week.  Mike Leigh himself is in Warsaw to present the retrospective's opening night film, All or Nothing, and participate in several extended Q&A's as part of the programme.  The extensive selection takes in 18 titles from Leigh's body of work ranging from early classics such as Nuts in May and Meantime through to his more recent films Happy-Go-Lucky and Another Year.

Following the retrospective in Warsaw, a selection of titles will screen will in Poznań (2-14 November 2013, Nowe Kino Pałacowe) and Wrocław (15-21 November 2012, kino Nowe Horyzonty).

The films will be accompanied by a multimedia photo and film posters exhibition, from the collections of the National Film Archive, the British Council in London and the British Film Institute.

Leigh’s work is deeply ingrained within the fabric of British culture and life, a fact observed by journalist Ian Haydn Smith who has written a new piece on Leigh to accompany the retrospective - see the 'downloads' section of this page.

Happy 75th Birthday British Council Poland!
